Cheep slip yoke eliminator DIY 1996 and newer NP231 transfer

Post by HACKSHACK »

This is how I did mine (01 TJ) works great and took about a hour to install. The reason I went this way is my plan is to install an atlas when I do my axles. The kit comes with the drill bit and tap you will need to install the yoke.
1. Jack the jeep and support on 4 jack stands high enough to set under.
2. Remove the rear drive shaft (8mm bolts at axle)
3. Measure you out put shaft so that 1 1/8 to 1 ¼ in of the shaft remains
4. Wrap tape around the shaft as a guide
5. Start jeep and put in reverse, using a cut off wheel let the shaft turn as you cut this will keep the cut square
6. Grind the shaft smooth after you have completed the cut
7. Find the center of the shaft and use a center punch to make a starting point for the drill bit
8. Drill a pilot hole 1 ¼ in deep and finish with provided drill to 1 ¼ in deep (use oil to cool the bit lots)
9. Tap the hole ( go slow !! and clean the tap often)
10. Install the new yoke and retainer bolt
11. Measure for drive shaft length

12. have the drive shortened and install

Needed parts
Rubicon express part #re1807 (got mine off Ebay for $50)
Front driveshaft from my '98 XJ (hunts junk yard for $10 they have more)
Yoke conversion Spicer Part # 211229x (used on the drive shaft to convert to flat flange $35 from NAPA)
Had drive shaft shortened cost $45
total for a slip yoke eliminator $140
Any questions let me know
