thanks again for comments.. svt..that is a drive to CT..good deal though. I think im leaning towards this offer for a 2002 TJ 4.0 with around 70k mi on it for $750 + my core. I may even make it to Silverlake and need a DD pretty quick here as we have 3 workers in our home and only 2 vehicles. Perhaps after that I start saving for a Titan 4.7L Stroker

update..
my 4.0 is being rebuilt in Napannee..tranny is there as well getting new bands, shift kit and breather tube relocated.
cylindar walls just needed honing after hot bath..new pistons, rods and bearings..cam is just fine.
I've heard that I should burn in 10k miles on regular 10w30 prior to a blend or all synthetic.
should be ready for pickup this week..hopefull on install this sunday.

Engine is rebuilt.. New pistons, rods, bearings. Fired it up last Sunday . Many thanks to Troy, Shane , Todd, Mike and Dave!! Had the tranny overhauled. Breather relocated to top. Inspection on transfer case chain. Grand total was 1600. Mike Brugh did a great job in napanee.

we too are having the same problem with the 02 WJ, 72k miles.....hope to have an answer this weekend on whats going on, am hoping it's the torque converter as well....it 's not missing, smoking or running rough, just knocking....4.0l, auto tranny. Have taken it to several mechanics and as soon as they hear it they say motor without even checking anything....one guy claims to have "shorted out" the cylinders one by one(unplugged fuel inj's) till he got to number 6 and said it quieted down "some"...WTF is that? Drove it to about 20 miles and mama said tranny was slipping...she shifted it manually then it shifted fine....am confused as a bad rod bearing has nothing to do with that?
