TRANSMISSION HELP!!!

Post by tgrant215 »

Hey guys, I was driving my 1998 TJ (manual transmission) today and lost the transmission. It made a noise that sounded like I ran over something huge. I now am only able to use reverse, first gear, and second gear. When I shift into third, the engine will just rev as if it is not engaged at all. This is the first time I've had any transmission issues so I am clueless! Any help would be appreciated. I figure the only way to find out for sure is to have a shop take it apart but I thought I would look for help here first. Thanks again!

Update: I have !st, 2nd, 5th, and reverse. No grinding at all. I'm only missing 3rd and 4th. The engine just revs and the transmision does not engage.

Since the problem is limited to 3rd and 4th, I would guess a broken gear, synchronizer, or shift fork. None of which is good...

I'm taking it in tomorrow to have it checked out. Thanks for the help! I'll update on what they find.

I also have a 98 TJ 4.0/5-speed (green) - You must have a ton of miles on that AX-15.

Actually it only has about 80K on it. I ended up deciding to look for a used one to swap in. The cost of a rebuild was too expensive for what I can do right now.

Eagle auto salvage in three rivers is pretty reasonable on price. I would also check out stuckmans auto salvage down in Syracuse.

Must have been a gear or synchro and not the fork!
