New Shocks???

Post by Rubble »

Trying to soften up the ride on my TJ. Superlifts are notorious for a rough ride. I am hoping some different shocks will help. I am leaning toward some Bilistein5100's. Trying to keep the cost down. I refuse to put 1000 bucks worth of shocks on. ANY SUGGESTIONS:?: :?: :?:

Shocks will.do very little for ride I've tried many different. Shocks Its the angle of your control arms that make the stiff ride. Imo

I had Bilstein 5100's on the back of that LCG TJ and they worked really nice. Run4lo switched to 5100's I believe...Let me see if I can get him to respond.

Yes, that's what I am running now. I would disagree that shocks make a difference. They are a softer ride than the RE's that I had before for sure.

Orange Rubi has a good point.. If you are running a big lift on short arms just putting shocks on isnt going to make it ride like a caddy. When I went from a 6" short arm kit to an 8" long arm kit on my XJ I kept the same shocks and it rode like a dream even with more lift.
I have the 5100s on my truck now, and I'm not a huge fan of them. plus the nice finish on them didnt last long at all, and my truck doesn't see dirt or snow.

must agree, high lift + short arms = bumps transmit right into the frame.
but good shocks can make a big difference.

I realize I drive a Jeep not a caddy. I'm not expecting it to feel like floating on a cloud. I don't believe it should ride like a skateboard either. I am only running a 4 inch short arm. I should have done more research before going with superlift. I have road in many jeeps with 4 inch short arms and the ride is far better. I am just trying to smooth things out a little.

You can always swap out just the coils. I havent had heard about bad luck with superlift till now and skyjacker I have seen issues with. RE is unavailable. I'd say BDS or maybe procomp

Also BDS has a stainless bodied inverted shock that is similar to a bilstein. They are built by edlebrock. They are a nice gas charged inverted shock. Roughly 100$ each.

OK, dont laugh... Before I found all the rust on my frame, I planned on lifting the blue YJ. I knew most of those offroad shocks are way stiffer... so... I figured out the amount of travel needed for the extra lift I planned. Then I looked up the specs of what seemed like 400 shocks on Monroe's site.

http://www.monroe.com/assets/downloads/ ... hSheet.pdf

I figured out that Ford Aerostar shocks fit the entire range I needed for the rear. And that a 2000 Ford F150 rear shock is perfect for what I needed in front. Spent prolly 20-30 bucks per shock and still have a decent ride with enough travel for the stock springs and a small lift. Hate to admit it, but the 'ol Jeep spends most of its days on the road.

It won't fix your stiff springs, but I wonder if you could do the same for a TJ and come out with a decent ride?

I put some some Bilstein 5100 shocks on last Friday. I will spare the details of the problems I had. Point is it did make a difference in the ride quality. In my opinion and my kidneys. WELL WORTH THE MONEY. :smt003
